KeySoft 9.4.1 and KeyMaps: Providing Informed Travel for All

March 19, 2014, Longueuil, QC: HumanWare is excited to announce another free update to the BrailleNote Apex. Last December, KeySoft 9.4 was launched, making the BrailleNote Apex the first electronic braille device capable of Nemeth math braille to print translation in a single tool. Combined with instant braille access to PowerPoint files, KeySoft 9.4 put braille efficiency at the forefront, ensuring that Apex users were the most efficient users of electronic braille.

Today, in partnership with Sendero, HumanWare brings another exciting enhancement to the long history of KeySoft. This update introduces KeyMaps, a new application exclusive to BrailleNote Apex users. KeyMaps is a fully accessible virtual navigation application to be included on all BrailleNote Apex devices. With KeyMaps, you can:

  • Download your country’s maps directly to the BrailleNote Apex using its internet connection. No need to use a PC, KeyMaps guides you through the simple process to download the map directly to the BrailleNote Apex.
  • Search for an address and explore the area around it. Traveling to a hotel next week? Search for it in KeyMaps and virtually learn the area and what is around the hotel before you even arrive.
  • Walking to a grocery store you haven’t been to yet? Search for its address or name in KeyMaps and learn the best route to take before you head out.
  • Use KeyMaps as a phonebook: Want the phone number to make a reservation at that new restaurant people can’t stop talking about? Search for it in KeyMaps and instantly see the phone number, address, and distance from you, and so much more.
  • Free informed travel for all: KeyMaps is free and exclusive to BrailleNote Apex users. Simply download your update to KeySoft 9.4.1 and become an informed traveler.

“As a blind traveler myself I completely understand the anxiety that can be created when going to a new area or location. KeyMaps helps to alleviate that anxiety by giving a visually impaired traveler a picture of what to expect before they go to this new location. Now when I travel to a new city I know the general area around my hotel, but also what restaurants are nearby, and how to get to them, putting the control back in my hands rather than needing to ask for directions everywhere,” says Greg Stilson, HumanWare’s Product Manager of braille products.

Included in your update to KeySoft 9.4.1 is an exclusive opportunity to upgrade to Sendero GPS 2014 at a significantly reduced cost. If you like using KeyMaps and want your Apex to guide you step by step on those trips, you can upgrade to the Sendero GPS 2014 package for $599. This package includes the 2014 software and a Bluetooth GPS receiver. This is nearly $500 off the full retail price and is exclusive to BrailleNote Apex users.

Below you will also find some video demonstrations of KeyMaps in action:

Traveling to a new place and virtually walking around ahead of time.
Learning more about points of interest and routes.

    One Last thing:

One of the most requested features we have received from teachers of the visually impaired has been to provide a method to display the Apex’s visual display on a tablet or smart phone. KeySoft 9.4.1 provides a simple method to do this. Using the Apex’s wireless connection and a standard VNC app from either the iOS or Android application stores, you can portably see what your student is working on and how best to work with them. Simply search for and install any of these three VNC apps for your chosen mobile device and quickly get connected to the Apex:
    1. VNC Viewer (Free on the Apple App Store)
    2. Remotix VNC & RDP ($19.99 on Apple’s App Store – Provides a simpler method to get connected)
    3. Android VNC (Free on the GooglePlay Store)

Watch the videos below to see a demonstration on how to display the Apex’s visual display on an iPhone or iPad:
